Chapter 12
It probably wasn’t wise to call what I shared with Ellis a relationship, but whatever it was shifted that day on the boat. He grew more comfortable and assertive, not to mention bolder—and not just in the bedroom. He became more personal, even. He didn’t ask me questions to figure out things for himself as much; he asked to learn about me.
My heart took a minor hit when he asked me to dinner the following day.
Don't fall for the married man.
Divorce wasn’t the end to complications. It was the start of several new ones. I knew even if he did end up getting divorced, there was no sunset to run off into on the horizon. Not yet, anyway.
We docked in Sooke early that afternoon, and I excused myself to check in with some work shit and to call Haley. In the meantime, Ellis spent way too much on fuel again.
Not for the first time I'd touched land in the past week, I was hit by my vertigo the moment I left the yacht. Fucking crazy that I'd be more used to being on the water.
Work was easily dealt with. Haley, not so much. It was too late in Europe, and she was already asleep, so I ended up talking to Adeline.
"She misses you. They've both been fussy today."
"No lie, I'm glad to hear it." I rubbed the back of my neck and took a deep breath. A group of tourists passed me, following whom I assumed was a guide of some sort. It was a stunning harbor—massive and surrounded by hilltops and forest—so I could see the appeal to explore the area. "I'm kidnapping them as soon as you get home."
I wanted to build a blanket fort and get a pedicure. Lyn was a pro at the latter—minimal scarring from the nail filing. There would be cookies and milk, too.
Adeline laughed softly. "Won't you have a house to get ready?"
I waved a hand. "Not much to do." I'd been smart and hired a painter the minute I'd been handed the keys. The old floors had recently been prettied up, the kitchen and bathrooms were new, and the little backyard was mine to play with. Moving in the furniture was all that remained. "Haley's requested a pink room with white polka dots. I'd fuck that up on the first dot."
She laughed again. "Fair enough. No polka dots for you?"
"Funny." I grinned. I wasn’t picky and had randomly chosen a gray color. The living room and the guest room would be left white for now. "So you've done Disney, you've done Paris—what's next?"
"Lincoln wants a couple days on a beach, so I think that’s the plan," she answered. "The others are going home tomorrow, too. Adrian's got school coming up." True. The new semester would start in a few weeks, and he was one of those high school teachers who loved his job. He'd spend an eternity getting everything ready. "Okay, so back to the girls staying with you…" There was a noise in the background, papers rustling.
